King’s College London
Computer Science with Management
(Artificial Intelligence Specialisation)
What inspired you to choose your course?
I chose to study computer science because I was not yet sure what I wanted to be in the future and wanted to keep all my options open. I enjoyed math, business, history, English, and science, but did not want to choose between any one of these specific subjects so early on. computer science is a great degree option because it allows you to enter almost any field after graduation.
All companies, regardless of industry, need computer scientists. Additionally, and as technology continues to play an increasing role in society, even more roles will require computer science knowledge. I chose “Computer Science with Management” specifically because I also wanted to understand how businesses are run, products are marketed, and people are managed.
What does your course involve and what do you enjoy most about it?
One of the best things about my course is how analytical and creative it is. We are constantly learning effective problem-solving through both example and hands-on practice. We explore existing solutions using mathematical theory, learn how to analyze solutions, and then come up with our own creative solutions or ideas. These problem-solving skills are extremely useful, as they extend to other areas of life. Facing and being able to solve difficult challenges as part of my course gives me confidence that I can always find a solution in challenges unrelated to my studies.
Another great thing about computer science is the number of subfields you can choose to focus on. It is a very flexible degree which can be customized as you develop your interests. Given that I have chosen to specialize in artificial intelligence, my classes this year have been heavily focused on AI and machine learning. However, every student is able to shape their own learning experience. Other students may have different interests, and choose instead to focus on cybersecurity, software engineering, or a mix of subjects as part of their course selection.
What do you hope to do after you have completed your studies?
After completing my studies I hope to go into industry and apply the knowledge I have gained in my course. Apart from learning on the job, I would also love to find opportunities to learn topics outside of those required by my role. Computer science is extremely expansive in what can be learned, so I will definitely want to keep exploring all the possibilities it offers. I would also love to continue learning about Business. I currently study management as part of my degree, and would love to gain more hand-on experience in this area.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying the same subjects as you at school/university?
Many people are intimidated by the thought of pursuing a degree in computer science. When you are first learning the basics of programming it may seem like everyone else knows so much more, and you may think that you will never be able to reach their level. It’s important to remember that everything is learnt through practice, and coding is no exception. As long as you are ready to work hard, your previous level of experience does not matter at all, and should not put you off pursing a degree in computer science.
It is also okay to not know exactly what you like, or what you want to study. You will find what you enjoy (and what you don’t enjoy) as you go along. Computer science includes such a wide breadth of topics and applications that you are almost guaranteed to find something you are passionate about. Overall, computer science is a very flexible degree that will provide you with countless types of opportunities in the future, and which will challenge you and develop your problem-solving, analytical, and creative skills
