University of Hertfordshire
BSc Honours in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence)
What inspired you to choose your course?
I have always been interested in a diverse spread of subjects, from archaeology and marine biology through to technology, film and design. I did not know which direction to head in; but I was lucky enough to do some work experience at a small software development company. The lead developer shared with me how computer science would provide me with a fantastic level of flexibility and thus the freedom to pursue work in any or all of the fields I was passionate about. Understanding the power and potential to create really resonated with me; providing the spark that inspired me to choose my course.
What does your course involve and what do you enjoy most about it?
I have had the pleasure of studying a broad array of computer science subjects during my course. Amongst my favourite areas of study have been an examination of emergence in artificial intelligence; exploring cognitive and social robotics; and undertaking ethical hacking and penetration testing. Moreover, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to engage with people as passionate as I am about technology and its myriad applications. Through this great community built around my course, I have had the opportunity to be involved in the peer-assisted learning initiative; which is student-lead and has been a deeply valued, formative part of my experiences. As a result, when I have finished my course, I feel I’ll have not only the skills but also the confidence to tackle anything.
What do you hope to do after you have completed your studies?
My intention is to continue studying at my university for a master’s degree in one of their computer science specialisms. Beyond that, I am very interested in the idea of potentially pursuing PhD studies in the field there.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying the same subjects as you at school/university?
Unlike most other subjects, computer science can empower you to pursue diverse opportunities in virtually any field. Whether it is working in the games industry, conservation or space; the list of possibilities could be endless. The skills you learn will enable you to create and collaborate on any idea you can imagine. It is an exciting area of study that is easy to be passionate about; especially since it is constantly evolving, in often unexpected ways. It really is what you choose to make of it, and it can take you wherever your interests lead; so throw yourself into it without reserve.
