There are over 330,000 software engineers employed in the UK, but many, many more are needed. Software engineers build the tech systems that run our world today, so you could find yourself working in almost any sector from finance, retail, artificial intelligence, computer generated imagery (CGI) in the film industry, healthcare, to energy systems; the scope is enormous.
If you enjoy coding or you’re good at maths then software engineering could be for you. You will use engineering principles and programming languages to build software that runs apps, websites, complex systems, databases, computer games and much more. Usually working as part of team, you will be involved in scoping the project which means finding out what the requirements are and then deciding what you can develop to create a solution. You will write and test the programme, maintain it, fix bugs and possibly even train people how to use it.
