Dr Andrew Rogoyski

Dr Andrew Rogoyski is Innovation and Partnership Director of the AI Institute at the University of Surrey. He has experienced several winters where interest in AI has nearly evaporated but is excited to now be in a summer of interest as big tech pours fortunes into development, some fruitful and some futile. 

In March 2023 he tried to co-sign the letter from 1,000 people calling for the suspension of development in the AI tool ChatGPT but couldn’t as the server crashed. Among those who did manage the sign the letter were Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak.

Professor Sir Martin Sweeting

In 1985, British technologist Professor Sir Martin Sweeting set up Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) with about £100 and four employees. The company pioneered rapid-response, low-cost and highly capable small satellites, on which much of our modern life depends. SSTL is a corporate spin-off from the University of Surrey, where Sweeting is a Distinguished Professor who founded and chairs the Surrey Space Centre.

Ian Taylor MBE

Ian Taylor MBE was Minister for Science, Space and Technology from 1994 to 1997 in the Conservative government under John Major.  He has continued to take a strong interest in science and technology during the remainder of his parliamentary career.  After standing down as an MP in 2010, he has pursued his business interests with a wide portfolio of directorships and advisory roles, mostly with science and technology companies and those who invest in them.

Stephen Temple CBE

Stephen Temple is an engineer by profession and has spent 25 years in the Civil Service (rising to a senior position in the Home Office and DTI) and 18 years in the private sector (rising to Director level including Board level). He has also recently published a book Casting the Nets, which provides an unparalleled insight into the great digital transformation of Britain’s communications networks over the period 1984-2004.
