Shaheed joined DEC, as an engineer straight from university in 1983. He worked at Acre Road in Reading on the DMB 32 project, which involved designing an IO board for VAX computers. As DEC developed, Shaheed moved to DEC Park 2 which was dedicated to engineering, and they reported to DEC US rather than DEC UK. He contributed to the development of the 50-way sync connector and other innovative technologies including inventing a graphic editor for state machines. As the IT industry developed, Shaheed moved from hardware design to software and design tools, anticipating the shift towards software in the industry. His final position at DEC was as Senior Engineer and towards the end of his time there, he built a transport multiplexer to transfer data between a German computer and a cable TV network, the first of his kind. This meant when his team was made redundant in 1997, they moved from DEC to Oracle and continued to work in video servers for companies who wanted to start using satellites to do shopping on televisions.
