Sian Cleary

Sian Cleary has used the Archives of IT and other sources to write her MA dissertation on Government policy towards IT from 1992 to 1997, the years of John Major’s prime ministership.  In the archive she discovered the pivotal work of Professor Stephen Temple CBE in getting a European policy, driven by the UK, for single mobile network.  She also admired the work of Charles Hughes who, after a long career at ICL and others, played a vital role in the Information Society Initiative by Government in association with Ian Taylor, MP and MBE, another contributor to the archive.

Dr Timothy Walker CB

Dr Timothy Walker managed the Alvey Programme from 1987 to 89, which researched advanced computing technologies.  Alvey paralleled Japan’s 5th Generation project and aimed to improve the UK’s performance / competitiveness in Information Technology. 

Dr Walker was a formidable academic over-achiever in his formative years.  After an early spell in university teaching and research he held top level posts, managing transformation in areas such as Industry (Alvey), Nuclear Energy and Immigration.  He advocates closer working between industry and universities and strong leadership in managing Government driven change.

Since retiring from the Civil Service he has remained busy with voluntary and charitable roles and uncovering local history.

Ian Taylor MBE

Ian Taylor MBE was Minister for Science, Space and Technology from 1994 to 1997 in the Conservative government under John Major.  He has continued to take a strong interest in science and technology during the remainder of his parliamentary career.  After standing down as an MP in 2010, he has pursued his business interests with a wide portfolio of directorships and advisory roles, mostly with science and technology companies and those who invest in them.

Stephen Temple CBE

Stephen Temple is an engineer by profession and has spent 25 years in the Civil Service (rising to a senior position in the Home Office and DTI) and 18 years in the private sector (rising to Director level including Board level). He has also recently published a book Casting the Nets, which provides an unparalleled insight into the great digital transformation of Britain’s communications networks over the period 1984-2004.

Charles Hughes

Charles Hughes, is one of the best known and highly regarded managers in the UK information technology business, with a career stretching back to 1967, much of it spent in ICL, the UK’s one-time computer flagship. He has also been a Government adviser, at critical times in the development of the UK IT industry. He was BCS President 2005/6
