Philip Virgo

Philip Virgo worked for Standard Telephones and Cables, and International Computers Limited (ICL). He then worked for the Wellcome Foundation advising on the introduction of IT systems. An active member of the Conservative Party from University he was trusted as a user to help put together Conservative Party policy on IT. He helped form the Parliamentary IT Committee (PITCOM) in the late 1970s to create links between the industry and politicians of all types.

Charles Hughes

Charles Hughes, is one of the best known and highly regarded managers in the UK information technology business, with a career stretching back to 1967, much of it spent in ICL, the UK’s one-time computer flagship. He has also been a Government adviser, at critical times in the development of the UK IT industry. He was BCS President 2005/6

Dr Roger Johnson

Past President of both the BCS, 1992 to 1993, and the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies, 1997 to ’99, Roger was Honorary Secretary for the International Federation for Information Processing 1999 to 2010. In 2009 he became a Fellow of Birkbeck, after 23 years as Dean of the Faculty of Social Science.

Alan Pollard

Alan had an Army career spanning 32 years and rose to the rank of Brigadier. After the Army Alan spent the next 10 years as an IT Consultant working with a number of multinational blue-chip companies such as EDS, Boots, British American Tobacco, H&W Shipyards, BAE Systems & Walkers Foods. He was President of the BCS 2008-09.

Geoff McMullen

AFter 6 years at UNIVAC Geoff was recruited by Shell where he stayed for neraly 20 years. He was BCS President 2001- 02 and has also been Managing Director then Chief Executive of UKERNA. Geoff was recruited by the Cabinet Office as a High-Risk team leader for Gateway reviews and carried out some 20 between 2006 and 2010.

Sir Anthony Cleaver

Sir Anthony Cleaver spent his career in IBM UK starting in 1962 and rising to chairman and chief executive until his retirement in 1994. He worked with Lloyds Bank to develop the world’s first variable amount cash dispenser installed in 1972. In the early 1980s he gained international experience with IBM’ Europe, Middle East and Africa operation, moving back to the UK in 1982 when he assured the successful launch in the UK of the IBM PC

Jim Norton

Professor Jim Norton is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, an external member of the board of the UK’s Parliament[sic] Office of Science and Technology, a governor of Coventry University, a Visiting Professor of electronic engineering at Sheffield University, a board member and trustee of the Foundation for Information Policy Research, FIPR. Sir Bryan Carsberg

Sir Bryan Carsberg started work as an accountant in accountancy partnerships and then moved to become professor of accounting at the London School of Economics. While there and subsequently at Manchester he started advising the government. He was the first choice to head Oftel, the telecommunications regulation organisation set to in the mid 1984 when BT was privatised to supervise it.
