Professor Michael Earl

Michael Earl is an expert in the management of IT by its users. He pioneered the use of prototyping in the development of IT systems in the early 1970s. In the mid-1970s he studies the emerging client-server IT approach and developed strategies for managing UIT based around that approach. He is also researching mergers and acquisitions and working on why 70% of mergers and acquisitions fail.

Sir Bryan Carsberg

Sir Bryan Carsberg started work as an accountant in accountancy partnerships and then moved to become professor of accounting at the London School of Economics. While there and subsequently at Manchester he started advising the government. He was the first choice to head Oftel, the telecommunications regulation organisation set to in the mid 1984 when BT was privatised to supervise it.

Iann Barron

Iann Barron nurtured three generations of computer designers in the UK at Elliott Brothers, Computer Technology (CT) and InMos.

He designed a computer at Elliott’s for the RAF and left to form his own company, CT, in 1965, raising private capital to fund it, one of the first to do so in the world.

He was forced out of CT in 1975 and after a spell as a consultant joined the InMos venture of the National Enterprise Board designing the transputer microprocessor and advising Motorola, Texas Instruments and Fairchild and also telling Intel what was wrong with their microprocessors.

Duane Jackson

The fascinating story of the successful entrepreneur of Kashflow and Patron of the Princes Trust, Duane speaks openly and frankly about how his life took some unexpected turns and he found himself in prison, teaching IT to fellow prisoners. Using a combination of skills Duane is director of the charity Code4000 which teaches inmates web development skills to help them find work on their release.

Charlie Ross

Charles Ross co-founded the Real Time Club of pioneers in real time computing over 50 years ago. He spent his life as a serial entrepreneur in the IT sector. He helped to develop one of the first online systems and pioneered computer typesetting. He helped get the European Union interested in funding Quantum computing developments. He was also involved in getting IT more widely appreciated by helping to found publishing alliances

Eben Upton CBE

Dr Eben Upton is world renowned for inventing the bare-bones computer named Raspberry Pi which is based upon the ARM processor. One of his fondest memories at school was of programming the BBC Micro, and the Raspberry Pi model numbers follow those of the BBC Microcomputer series.

Victor Basta

Victor Basta is a maestro of mergers and acquisitions in the IT sector. He says he is somebody who helps other people through deals rather than doling deals himself.

In 1986 he came across the IT industry through his activities in mergers and acquisitions working in New York for the General Motors Treasurer’s Office. Between September 1989 and November 2001 he worked at Broadview International an then became Managing Director of Magister, a boutique investment bank based in London and San Francisco. His first deal was selling LoveFilm to Amazon for around $350 million, now Amazon Prime Video.

Richard Holway MBE

After being described as (one of) the UK’s Leading IT Analysts for nearly three decades, Richard Holway now prefers the title “Trusted Influencer”. He is now progressing a “pluralist” career after selling his company of 20 years, in late 2006, and using a lifetime’s networking experience to help other companies where he has joined the board as a NED. In 2009 he established TechmarketView LLP.

Sue Black OBE

Professor Sue Black is an award-winning Computer Scientist, Technology Evangelist and Digital Skills Expert, who established #techmums, which runs programs and initiatives designed to support mothers becoming more familiar, confident, and excited about the use of technology in their personal, professional, and parenting lives.

#techmums vision is to reach a million mums and ignite potential in not only mums, but their families, and their communities. #techmums trains women in key areas including: Tech Skills, The Cloud, Digital Safety, and Coding to allow them to enter a new career path and gain confidence regarding returning to employment or setting up their own businesses.

Sue also led a successful campaign to save Bletchley Park in between 2008-11 and wrote a book about the experience.

Sir Peter Bonfield

Sir Peter Bonfield worked in the electronics component, computing and telecommunications sides of IT. He was invited in 1981 to become operations manager of ICL, the state-owned computer company rapidly running out of cash designing a new range of mainframes. In 1984 ICL was taken over by STC and Sir Peter became MD. In 1996 Sir Peter moved to BT and helped to lead it through a transformation from a utility company into a growth company
